AVD vs Citrix vs Omnissa Horizon: How to Choose the Right VDI Platform

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) has moved from a niche remote-access tool to a mainstream way for businesses to deliver secure, centrally managed desktops to a hybrid workforce, contractors, and branch offices. The catch is that there is no single "best" platform — Microsoft, Citrix, and Omnissa (formerly VMware End-User Computing) each take a genuinely different approach, and the right choice depends entirely on the environment you already have and the problem you are actually trying to solve.

What Each Platform Actually Is

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is Microsoft's cloud-native VDI service, built directly into Azure. It uses a multi-session Windows 11 capability unique to Microsoft, meaning several users can share a single virtual machine rather than each requiring their own — a meaningful licensing and cost advantage for organisations already invested in Microsoft 365 and Azure Active Directory (Entra ID).

Citrix Virtual Desktops is the most mature and platform-agnostic of the three. It can run on Azure, AWS, on-premises hypervisors, or Nutanix, and is built for organisations with complex, mixed application estates, demanding graphics or performance requirements, or a need to publish individual applications rather than full desktops.

Omnissa Horizon is the strongest fit for organisations already standardised on VMware vSphere or Nutanix AHV for their virtualisation layer. It integrates tightly with existing VMware vSphere or Nutanix management tools, making it a natural extension for IT teams who already run their infrastructure that way rather than a separate platform to learn.

Where Each Platform Tends to Win

In practice, the decision usually comes down to a handful of factors rather than a feature checklist:

• Existing Microsoft investment — organisations deep into Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Azure typically find AVD the most cost-effective and lowest-friction option, since much of the licensing is already covered.
• On-premises or hybrid requirements — businesses that need to keep desktops on-premises for data residency, latency, or regulatory reasons lean toward Citrix or Horizon, both of which run comfortably outside the public cloud.
• Application complexity — organisations with legacy, graphics-intensive, or highly customised applications often need Citrix's application-publishing and profile-management depth.
• Existing virtualisation platform — if you already run VMware or Nutanix for your servers, Horizon usually means less new infrastructure and less new admin overhead than introducing a separate stack.
• Budget model — AVD's consumption-based Azure pricing suits variable workloads well; Citrix and Horizon licensing tends to suit organisations that prefer predictable, capacity-based costs.

A short discovery exercise covering your current identity platform, application list, user profiles, and connectivity between sites is usually enough to narrow AVD, Citrix, and Horizon down to a clear recommendation, rather than a guess.
