Straight answer

“Private cloud” and “HCI” describe the same thing from two sides

Private cloud is the business view: cloud-like elasticity, self-service and automation, on infrastructure that is yours alone — no shared tenancy, no data leaving your jurisdiction.

Hyper-converged infrastructure is how it is actually built: a cluster of x86 nodes whose local NVMe storage is pooled by software, so compute, storage and networking are one system with one management plane instead of three products from three vendors.

We use both terms deliberately. If you are comparing quotes, what you are buying is HCI. What your board is approving is a private cloud.

What hyper-converged replaces

Most environments we assess are still three-tier: servers in one silo, a SAN in another, a fibre-channel fabric between them. It works — until you need to grow it, patch it, or find out which layer caused last night's incident.

Choosing a platform

Nutanix or Sangfor HCI?

Both are enterprise-grade platforms that deliver a genuine private cloud, and both scale. They differ in emphasis: Nutanix offers the widest platform and the deepest DR and automation tooling, while Sangfor integrates compute, storage and networking most tightly — which means less to license, learn and operate.

Plenty of customers take the implementation and run the platform themselves. Others want it run for them. And some already have a platform and need only the operations. Each is priced as its own piece of work.

We assess, design, procure, build and migrate. You get documentation, a handover session and a platform your team owns outright. No ongoing commitment, no retainer.

Best when you have IT staff who will run day-to-day operations themselves.

Option two — optional

Implementation plus ongoing operations

Add the platform to one of our service plans and we run it with you, or for you.

If your private cloud is already built — whether we deployed it or someone else did — we can take over day-to-day operations: monitoring, OS and firmware patching, cluster health and capacity reviews, backup verification, and SLA-bound escalation, on Nutanix or Sangfor HCI.

That is what GigaExtend is for. Your IT team keeps ownership of the platform and the relationship with the business; we sit behind them with the platform expertise, the tooling and the escalation path. We start with a health check of what you already have, so nothing is taken on blind.

Questions we get asked

Before you shortlist

Is a private cloud just a server in my own office?

No. A single server gives you no resilience — when it fails, the workload stops. A private cloud is a cluster: at least three nodes, with the storage replicated across them, so a node can fail or be patched with the workloads still running.

Do I still need a SAN?

No, and that is much of the point. HCI pools the drives inside each node into one distributed store, so the array, the fibre fabric and the specialist skills that go with them all come out of the design — along with their cost and their firmware cycles.

Can I start small and grow?

Yes. Three nodes is a normal starting cluster. Adding a fourth later adds compute and storage together, without downtime and without replacing what you already bought — which is the opposite of a SAN refresh.

We are on VMware and our renewal has gone up sharply. Is this the alternative?

For a lot of customers, yes — the licensing changes since the Broadcom acquisition are the most common reason we are asked to look at HCI right now. Both Nutanix AHV and Sangfor aSV replace ESXi outright. We put the cost of staying next to the cost of moving, migration effort included, so the decision is made on numbers rather than frustration.

How does disaster recovery work?

Three routes, depending on what you have: replicate to a second cluster at a DR site, replicate into Azure or AWS, or protect the workloads with Veeam and tier the older restore points off-site. Most customers combine cluster replication for fast recovery with backup for retention.

Where does the hardware sit?

Your datacenter or comms room if it meets the power and cooling requirements, any co-location facility if it does not, or split across both for DR. The assessment covers which is realistic for your site.
