Why plant IT is its own discipline
An office outage is an inconvenience measured in productivity. A stopped production line is measured in contribution per minute, idle crew, the restart ramp and the scrap that comes off it before the process is back in spec. The two problems are not the same size, and they are not solved the same way.
Most IT providers treat a plant as a larger office. They patch during the day, put the HMI on the same flat network as the accounts department, and cannot tell you where the PLC programs are backed up. We work the other way round: the process comes first, and the IT is designed not to interrupt it.

What is an hour of downtime actually worth on your line?
Before any conversation about redundancy, monitoring or backup is worth having, it helps to know the number you are protecting.
