Whole server, minutes not hours
A failed VM can be started directly from the backup file while it is still being restored in the background, so the service returns before the data has finished moving.
Single file or folder
Mount a restore point and pull back exactly what was lost, without restoring the machine around it.
Inside the application
Recover an individual mailbox item, SharePoint document or database table rather than rolling the whole application back.
Failover to a replica
For the workloads that genuinely cannot wait, a standby replica is kept warm and can be failed over to, then failed back cleanly afterwards.
Where the second and third copies live.
Veeam does not have to keep everything on the same disk it wrote to. Older restore points move automatically to cheaper, more distant storage on a policy you set once.
Azure Blob storage
Recent restore points stay local for speed; older ones tier out to Azure automatically. A genuinely off-site copy with no second building and nothing extra to rack.
Tape and LTO
Scheduled writes to tape for multi-year retention, audit and regulatory copies. Once the tape leaves the drive it is offline, and nothing on the network can reach it.
Hardened and immutable
Backups written to a hardened repository or to object storage with object-lock cannot be altered or deleted before their retention expires — not by an administrator, and not by ransomware holding those credentials.
Need faster local restores as well? Many customers put an ExaGrid appliance behind Veeam as the on-site target — quick full-server recovery locally, with a retention tier the network cannot see.

When Veeam is the wrong place to start.
